Gradio and COREtet for the End of Time
Today I was the guest host of "Grady on the Radio", which is Garrett's weekly radio show on Flyer Radio. It was a great time, we played some killer tunes, and Garret and I had some fantastic rapport on air, culminating in him calling me an asshole and incurring the wrath of the FCC. Well, they haven't called yet, but I'm confident they will. A few of the rocking tunes we spun? How about Postal Service's "We Will Become Silhouettes", Elliott Smith's "Twilight", Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, and to top off the show, "Rainbow Connection" as sung by the maestro Kermit the Frog. The show was surely the highest rated program in the timeslot, and I'm confident once this weeks numbers are in, Garrett is going to be taken into syndication. It was just that good. But hey, that wasn't even the extent of my day today!
I am in CORE. For those of you who aren't exactly clear on what it is, it is a program that allows me to complete my Humanities base courses in a setting which integrates the different subjects. The goal is for students to be able to draw connections between different subjects and curriculums and be able to see the world in the big picture, but also recognize the more subtle relationships in cultures throughout history. At least that's my take on it.
A lot of people will say that CORE sucks, that it's a ton of extra work with no real benefits, but I disagree. It is a lot of work, and it is very challenging, but for me it fits really well, and I enjoy the opportunity to take a different avenue to learning.
Anyways, tonight we were required to go to a concert performance of Oliver Messiaen's "Quartet For the End of Time." I had never heard the piece before, and I got a lot out of the performance. It is a beautiful work, and the musicians gave a great rendition of it. The preceding lecture was pretty dull, but it was very nice to just spend an evening in the chapel listening to music. It was very relaxing, a fine escape from my studies.
But the best part of the night was easily my attire. We were encouraged to dress up for the show, and I took that to heart. I wore my tightest, sexiest, George-Michaels-in-the-"Faith"-music-video-est jeans, my denim jacket, a nice blue shirt, a blue tie, and to top it off, I borrowed Garrett's blue snakeskin cowboy boots. I was quite a sight, and not to toot my own horn, I was the best dressed SOB in the room. Check out the picture for full effect of my radiant splendor.
I'm headed to Chicago tomorrow for the midterm break, very pumped about it, expect some good tales of my weekend with the sisters and some Omaha pals.
