All-Nighter
A whole night awake. An all-nighter. Tonight I had my first one at Dayton. What was a common fixture back in the Big O was transplanted into UD tonight. I'm no surgeon, but I'd say it was resounding success. Why we did it, I'm still not entirely sure, but there's caffeine coursing through my veins right now, so I might as well roll with it. I was with Kristen while she was doing her laundry, and we went out to the courtyard to sit and wait, and lo and behold, there sat Abby, Jenny, Caron, and Brad. They informed us of their endeavour, namely to watch the sun dawn upon the sweet campus of UD. It was a fantastic idea, and we quickly signed on for the long haul. What transpired is sure to go down in history as one of the premier nights of freshman year. We sat in the courtyard and listened to music for quite a while, being silenced only by snobbish audiophiles and low batteries. We also spoke of politics, and it was then I discovered that I inadvertantly made friends with a group of filthy stinking liberals. As a filthy stinking liberal myself, I was quite pleased with this discovery.
To sum up what happened next will not do it justice. I have neither the capacity nor the desire to expound upon my experience entirely, but I will pay it the due that it so richly deserves. After Abby and Brad took a walk, they returned to tune us all into the glory of the late night walk. We decided that in order to make an educated decision, we would have to partake in a walk as well. So we set off, rounding Founders and heading past the Humanities Building. That's when we say it. A wide open yard, with the sprinklers running. (As a sidenote, I skipped a lot of time, it was filled with Jenny and I doing our best to reform a guy with some serious problems.) Either way, these sprinklers seemed pretty refreshing.
O, what a sight we must have made. I was still fully clothed, clad in a sweater and jeans. The others were in bedtime clothes. But still, we set of running through these sprinklers, leaping for joy, reveling in our freedom and our youth. There were injuries incurred, Kristen slipped and banged her ass, and I ran headlong into a tree branch. But the pain was worth it, only compouding the incredible sense of life we felt as we whooped and hollered.
We finished our walk and headed to KU, where we realized we had a few hours until it was time for breakfast. So we passed it in the only way possible: impromptu renditions of Disney songs. I must say, Brad and I belt out a damn good Hakuna Matata. The medley was fantastic, covering just about all of the good song from our childhood. Utterly brilliant, those are really the only words for it.
Breakfast was great, the bagel sandwich was excellent, I tip my hat to the fine folks at KU who wake up so early to feed us tasty treats. But now, it's time to go to class. Only two today, only two.
