Musical Tastes Evolving

A big part of most college students life is the music they listen to. A person's musical tastes can help define them, they can shape the way they see the world. Lately, I've been listening to a type of music that I never really got into before: the music of Kanye West.

I started getting into Kanye over Christmas break, my cousin Matthew is a big fan, and Kanye made up approximately 75% of the music on his computer, or so it seemed, because that was all he played. So, after getting back to school, I picked up copies of his albums College Dropout and Late Registration.

I've really grown to love just about all the songs. I don't know why, but it resonates differently than hip-hop I've heard before. The beats seem more interesting and challenging, which I attribute to Kanye's experience as a producer. But what really is great is the lyrics.

The lyrics to Kanye's songs are at the same time witty and poignant. He can be darkly clever with his commentary on the state of the world today. They songs are equally interesting, whether it's while I'm studying, while I'm at a party, or during a particularly intense game of Tecmo (1993 Denver Broncos, 17-0 Super Bowl Champs!)

Anyways, everybody should check out Kanye, he grabs an added bit of my respect because he, like me, was forced onto a liquid diet for six weeks. His experience was worse than mine, but I can still feel him.
