Campus Jobs--take advantage of them!
I've had many different jobs since I first started working when I was 15. Most have been restaurant-related such as being a hostess for Damons, a delivery driver for Donatos Pizza, and a server for the UD Catering Department. While I find food service jobs quite exciting because of how fast-paced and energetic they can get, I think my on-campus job in the LTC has been my favorite yet (besides writing this blog...that's truly the best job!). But my weekly job in the ground floor of the library is great for many reasons. Because it's not just a front desk position, there are still set-ups and deliveries to be done for different faculty meetings. This is nice because it keeps things different and guarantees there is always something going on (and leftover food from some of the meetings!). This can create that fast-paced feel that I enjoy from restaurant jobs. Yet at the same time, most of my work here in the LTC can be done at a computer...which creates a good balance. Plus, the hours are extremely flexible and my supervisor is great!
If you are a prospective student considering UD, my advice to you is to find an office-type job like this as soon as you start your freshman year! These types of jobs are the most popular and go pretty fast, but freshmen are the desired hiring group because they can keep you for four years. I didn't work at all my first year at UD and that's one thing I regret...thinking about all that extra money I could have made while I look back on my student loan debt from the past four years is hard. Campus jobs are so convenient and so abundant...they are good for your resume and for getting references once you reach my point and are looking into the job field! When you come to UD (which I hope you do!) get out there within your first week on campus and start looking for a job...it'll pay off in the end--trust me!
