Big City Fun

Deep dish pizza...yum!

In order to have one last fun adventure before summer was over, my roommate Christin and I thought it would be fun to take a road trip to Chicago! Our friends Melissa and Laura both lived there this summer...right in the city, so it was such a fun time getting to tour the city and spend time with friends we hadn't seen all summer. Christin had never been to Chicago before so it was a completely new experience for her, and I've only been there once so the city was still pretty new to me. We arrived Friday and stayed until Sunday night, so it was nice to have a full two days to visit. Melissa and Laura lived in a one-room studio apartment so it felt like freshmen year all over again cramming into one room to sleep. Our friend Matt was also visiting that weekend because he was there for Lollapalooza, so it was definitely like one big slumber party...I loved it.

We used all day Saturday as our "tourist" day and just walked through the city and tried to see and do as many things as possible. We started with Chicago's famous deep dish pizza for lunch and then we were fueled up for walking around the rest of the day. Some of my favorite sites were definitely Millennium Park with "The Bean," and the ferris wheel at Navy Pier (see the pictures!). Luckily, it was a beautiful day for sight-seeing...the weather couldn't have been more perfect. That night we went to a REALLY fancy dinner at the restaurant where Melissa works, then headed out to Wrigley-ville for the night so we could experience a little bit of the Chicago night-life. Melissa's older brother and his friend were in town, too, so they met up with us and had fun acting like they were in college again.

Sunday was also a pretty packed day. We went to Mass at the Cathedral near Melissa and Laura's apartment but unfortunately it was under construction, so we celebrated the Mass in a school auditorium instead...but now I want to come back to Chicago just so I can see what the new cathedral will look like! After that, we went to the American Girl store which was basically a long walk down memory lane for us because we were obsessed with those dolls when we were little. We spent probably over an hour in there just looking at all the new dolls and accessories...it was so much fun. Our final Chicago activity concluded with a tour at the Goose Island Brewery where we learned how they brew beer and even got to try all their different types! Goose Island is a pretty popular beer in Chicago, but I had never heard of it before so I think their main market is the Chicago area. After all of that it was finally time to face the Chicago traffic and head home! We were exhausted, but we managed to make it back to Dayton around 1am that night. What a great weekend and a wonderful way to end the summer!
