An Unexpected Alarm Clock
Spring break has flown by...I cannot believe it's almost Friday. It's been a pretty low-key week, compared to a typical week at UD, so as much as I'd rather be back in Dayton hanging out with my friends right now, this time at home has been refreshing. This morning I was awaken by the soothing sounds of hammers and drills on the roof of my house. We were finally getting a new roof due to the damaging winds from the wind storm back in September...and of all days they decided to do work on our house, it was my day off. Over break, I have been working at the mall where I worked during the holiday season...they let me pick up a few hours while I've been home this week and today was one of only two days off. So of course, I was excited to treat today as a real spring break...sleep in late, watch TV, get lunch with a friend...as you can tell, my day was PACKED. But at about 8:30 this morning I was startled by the "BANG" of the roofers. Unless you have had this experience before, I don't think you can understand how loud and scary this seems when you are sound asleep. It sounded as if the people on the roof were banging so hard into our house that the roof was going to cave in and the workers were going to fall right on top of me while I laid in bed. I know that sounds dramatic, but it's the only way to describe the lovely form of an "alarm clock" I had today.
So much for my quiet day off. The ruckus outside was unbearable...I was able to hear it from every room of the house. I tried to drown out the noise with some TV and music at different times throughout the day, but unfortunately it didn't make that much of a difference. And this wasn't just a job that takes a few hours....they didn't leave our house until after 6:00 tonight...and the sounds didn't stop the entire time. Luckily, I had lunch plans lined up with my friend Andrew and then I decided to run some errands around town, so those few hours away from the house were pleasant. I think the best part of the day is when I left the house later in the evening when the workers were packing up. One of the guys was amazed I had been in the house almost the entire day and then apologized for me having to put up with the sound. "It's okay, I'm on spring break...don't feel too bad for me," I told him. "That's even worse!" he replied. And, although it's not a completely finished product (they have to come back in the morning to finish up a couple things), our roof does look pretty great! The silver lining to the entire situation is that tomorrow morning I might not even need an alarm clock to wake me up, because I can count on them being here somewhere in between 8:30 and 9!
