The Job Search is Now in Full Force

Don't we look professional! On our way to the Career Fair.

Monday's interview went very well. The school was very welcoming and it is a place I can see myself next year. The principal asked me if I was interested in coming back and interviewing with the team, so I think that meant the interview went well. So now, I am just waiting by my computer for the future changing e-mail. Before the interview, over the weekend, Ben and I joined his friends to karaoke and then on Saturday we went to the Westward Expansion Museum underneath the St. Louis Arch. At school right now I am teaching a Pioneer Unit. So I was excited to learn more about Lewis and Clark and take some pictures to bring back to my students. It was a great weekend, and really the only part of my Spring Break that was relaxing.

On Tuesday, I spent most of the day preparing for the Stander Symposium. I participated in the Stander for the last two years. The Stander Symposium is held to recognize the research work being done by UD students and give them the opportunity to share their work with their peers as well as the faculty and staff of other departments. The first year I presented at the Stander, I presented my experience and data collection from my work in a Struggling Readers Research Team. Last year I presented my initial research on my thesis of Differentiated Instruction. This year I will present the application of differentiated instruction and the fieldwork that has supported this teaching methodology. I completed my 36 by 48 inch poster and printed it out then on Thursday morning. I also spent Tuesday night preparing for the University of Dayton Career Fair for Teacher Education students.

Every year Career Services sets up a career fair specifically for education majors. This year, schools from all over came to Dayton to find UD students. There were schools from Boston, Las Vegas, Louisville, Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, North Carolina and New York. However, there were not any schools from St. Louis, nor were there any from my hometown, Toledo. Therefore, although these were not places I intend to move to, it was wonderful experience as I got to learn about other districts, their hiring and application process as well as the expectations schools have for their teachers. My roommate, who wants to teach either in this area of back in Cincinnati, had great success on Wednesday. She was making many connections, which have led her to second interviews as early as this week. So, I am very excited for her. We were laughing on our way out the door Wednesday morning as we stood looking at each other in our suits. It's almost like I feel as if I was dressing up in my mom's clothes. Owning a suit makes you feel grown up really quickly.

Thursday I drove home to see my family and watched my one-year-old sister move without any thought. Now that she can move on her feet, it's a constant chase around the house. She's not really steady yet, so she takes quite a few nose dives. As I watched her, it seemed as if she was looking five feet in front of her, and determined to move to that place no matter what may be lying on the floor in front of her. She has been so much fun to watch grow this year.

On Friday, I rushed back to Dayton and then to Glen Helen in Yellow Springs where my team led our last Metanoia Retreat. It was a wonderful, laid-back weekend. Although I am going to bed immediately after writing this, I feel refreshed and ready for the week and the big Stander Symposium on Wednesday.
