Second Day of Spring???

The Spring Storm

Last night before I went to bed at 10:00 pm the weather channel was predicting a big spring snow storm. But when my alarm went off at 6:30 am there wasn't a flake of snow to be found out my window. So I got ready and rushed out the door only to find the storm's beginnings at 7:30 am. My usual 15 minute commute lasted almost a half hour as the white out like weather began. Once I got to school there was a lot of talk about how ridiculous our morning drives were and how most of us thought being in a bus would be pretty dangerous. Almost ready to start the day at 8:30 am, my school closed. Upon hearing the news we were all very excited. However, since the junior high and high school were already in session it seemed only fair that the teachers at the elementary school would stay and finish out the day as well (you know, those people who drove to school and braved the weather). Phew, were people mad. Seeing as we just had a "teacher work day" last Friday, were only two days into a new quarter, and have spring break coming up on Friday, there wasn't a lot of teacher work we could do without the students there. So my teacher decided to talk a half sick day and we spent the morning redecorating the room and cleaning closets.

When I got home I didn't really know what to do with myself. These unexpected free moments catch me by surprise. So I did what any college student would do and climbed back in bed. I finished a book, took a nap, ate, started another book and then realized my afternoon was over. Needless to say, I was very unproductive, and honestly, I could climb back in bed again right now.

I should probably catch you up to today's snow day. Last Monday, I had a mock interview that went very well. I received a lot of good advice and feel very confident about my upcoming interview March 27th in St. Louis. Sure I say confident but you know I'm scared to death inside. Anyway, last week was UD's Spring Break and so it was very quiet around here, although my roommate did appreciate all of the parking spots right in front of our house. Thursday night I joined some of the teachers I work with for a Margarita Meltdown at my teacher's house. We had a teacher workday on Friday so we were allowed a little fun Thursday after school. I laughed so hard and we had soo much fun just sitting around sipping our Margaritas and telling funny stories. I know, it sounds like I'm a loser, but really I just think I'm ready for life after college. Although we were all home by 9pm Thursday night, there were a few teachers who had pretty rough mornings the next day as they submitted there grades at school.

On Friday after school, we went out with some friends to the Fieldhouse. It sounded like fun until my eyes were burning. When we left only a few hours later, I felt as if I had smoked a whole pack of cigarettes. It was not very glamorous over there. First off, I only really knew the people we walked over there with, every one else was over the age of 40 and having way too much fun. Secondly, it's funny the first time you see two drunk 40 year olds fall flat on their face on the floor of a dirty bar, but the second and third times it's just annoying. Thirdly, I don't think anyone was checking IDs as there was a 12 year old there with his dad so I felt like I needed to save this child. Fourthly, the green bear reminded me of one of those St. Patrick's Day milkshakes from McDonalds and so I knew that if I drank it I was just going to be disappointed. Needless to say, I stopped at Starbucks on my way home for a cup of warm chai and finished my crazy St. Patrick's day night in my bed falling asleep to a movie. Boy was crazy here on St. Patty's (I hope you see the sarcasm there).

On Saturday, I visited my three year old boyfriend Luis and his family. They've in most ways adopted me in my four years here at UD. We sat outside by a fire and watched Luis entertain us with his performing abilities. Most of the time when I come over to baby-sit I feel like he's doing most of the entertaining. Anyways, these wonderful people offered to host my graduation part at their house. You see, I have no back yard and my hallway of a house would only fit my immediate family. So Saturday night, after graduation mass, they have opened their home to family and friends to celebrate my college graduation. Wow. I feel so blessed to have met the Gonzalez-Pagan family and hope they know how grateful I am for having them in my life.

Tomorrow, I am off to a conference in Columbus on Differentiated Assessment a theme of my honors thesis. I am looking forward to the workshop as it is being led by Rick Wormeli, one of the most intelligent, entertaining educational speakers I know of. If you are a middle school teacher and have not read his book Meet Me In the Middle please go buy it now. It is like a middle school teachers bible with all the answers to adolescents and good teaching. So yeah, I'm excited about tomorrow.

Thursday morning, we are going bowling with our fifth graders. I'm excited to see all of the budding romance in action! After school we have parent teacher conferences and then following that I am venturing to St. Louis. Yes, I know, it's going to be late. But I'm a very sleepy person in the morning so I think it's better than the alternative. It will be nice to start a long awaited Spring Break. While I'm in St. Louis I'm planning on going to the Lewis and Clark museum as we are studying that in Social Studies right now and want to bring things back to show the kids. After my interview Monday morning, I'll be back at UD Where I don't think much breaking will happen. So wish me luck and cross your fingers for me (I almost wish I didn't tell you I had this interview, because now you're going to expect a result), let's just hope that I find the right fit somewhere in the next couple months.
