It takes a Flyer...

It takes a Flyer to do the kind of work that UD students do in the UD Summer Appalachian Program in Kentucky. This past weekend, Ben and I drove to Salyersville, Kentucky and spent the weekend visiting with these amazing Flyers. Although they are impacting many lives through their work there, they realize that they are really the ones who are being impacted through the relationships they are building. While we were there, we also met Ryan, a Flyer in the UDSAP program. He will be a senior next year and he and his family live in Illinois, only about 20 minutes from us in St. Louis. They gave us there phone number and email address and offered to have us over sometime. They had just met us and were willing to open their home to us. That's what UD is about!

While we were in Kentucky, we went swimming in a swimming hole, camped out in a tent, line danced, hiked up to High Rocks, embraced the outhouse, enjoyed a bucket shower, and through it all we were sweating due to the ridiculous temperature. It's nice to be back in air conditioning. I still haven't adjusted to the 90-degree weather of St. Louis.

It was so nice to see so many people that I hadn't seen for months now and hearing what they were doing. A lot of people are participating in a year of service everywhere from Oregon to Africa. Some of our friends are getting married and others are going back to school to pursue higher education. Everyone is so happy and it is obvious they are going to be very successful.

This weekend I am finally moving into my very own apartment. I am also officially becoming a Missouri resident as I go through the torturing process of registering my car. I've put more miles on my car trying to register it than I would have liked. My mom is driving down with a U-Haul on Friday and the chaos will begin there. Hopefully in the unpacking process I will find my camera. Yes, I'm hoping it's still packed somewhere.
