A Break from Work. Maybe?
Summer. It is the one time of year that I can relax completely without worries or cares. The time of year where I can sit back on my porch with sunglasses, lemonade and a good book and dive headfirst into a wonderful new world or just vegetate in front of the TV for hours. At least that is what I hoped for this summer. So far it has proved more work related then I had previously anticipated. To be completely honest most of my summer up to this point has been spent catching up on work that I had not had time to complete during the school year and doing chores for my parents.
As the new president for Habitat for Humanity it seems there is always something I need to accomplish. It is hard being the president for an organization. You have to get ready for the upcoming year by reinforcing contacts with affiliate and International contacts, look for and apply for new funds, understand all the aspects of the organization, and finally look through all the previous records from previous presidents to better understand what the organization has done. The work seems to never end and takes up a lot of my time, but I enjoy it. Finding a new fundraising idea brings a thrill to my day. I realize I am probably pretty weird for enjoying this but I guess I am who I am.
Habitat is not the only activity I have to prepare for. With training for my internship at Miami Valley Hospital less than a week away, finishing most of the pre-employment procedures has influenced a large portion of my day. Driving down for physicals and tests has started to get me accustomed to the drive I will be making daily. I decided that the best way to make the drive both interesting and beneficial would be to start renting books on tape from the library. They tend to be very interesting and keep me thinking. Plus, if they start getting boring I can pop in a music CD and sing along to that (yes, I sing along to the music in my car).
Regardless of the daily work which pops up, I still try to find time every day to sit back and enjoy myself. My primary enjoyment activity currently is reading. I started reading the Hobbit again. I happen to be a huge Tolkien fan and the Hobbit is one of my favorite books, so getting to read it again has been a real treat. Hopefully I will be able to read all of his works by the end of the summer, which should be a real challenge. I think I can do it (I hope).
