Wind Warning!
I saw wind today like I've never seen before. As the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed through Dayton this afternoon, wind gusts of 60 mph rocked houses throughout the student neighborhood, sending debris flying down the streets and between houses. First, large branches began crashing to the ground and blowing across parking lots. Then, roof shingles flew off houses, and pieces of vinyl siding ripped off my house and the neighbor's house. It was unlike anything I've seen before. As these conditions persisted for several hours, I couldn't help but imagine what it's like being in a Hurricane when it first makes landfall. The storm proved its power by creating such strong winds in the Midwest after hammering Texas just yesterday morning. From my house, I could see shingles and waterproof roof membrane being blown off the top of St. Joseph's hall.
The strong winds and flying debris has caused power outages throughout the area, including my house. This has forced me to come to the library tonight, especially since the University-wide alarm system in the houses causes a loud, obnoxious beeping constantly in each house that is without power. Is this really necessary?! I think I can notice when I don't have electricity without an annoying alarm. Since this alarm prevents anything close to sleeping, the RecPlex is open to students who can bring sleeping bags and pillows.
