University Finances

Everyone is well aware that attending college is getting more and more expensive. Whether you are a student or a parent, you know that tuition, room and board, university fees, and books can really add up quickly. It now takes years of planning to avoid heavy student loans and consequent debts coming out of college. Objectively, I believe that, across the board, the average cost of going to college is far overpriced. Relatively, though, the results from obtaining a college degree, versus not attending college, usually far outweigh the costs required to earn the degree. High school diplomas used to be the necessary achievement; now college degrees are. The University of Dayton is not, by any means, a cheap place to receive an education. However, it is not more expensive than comparable schools, especially private Catholic institutions.

In my mind, one aspect of UD particularly sets the school apart from other Catholic universities: its generous bestowal of scholarships and financial aid. All universities offer need-based financial aid packages, but many do not offer academic-based scholarship awards. Made possible by donors in the Dayton area and University programs, UD awards talented incoming students in a variety of ways. I am a recipient of a John W. Berry, Sr. Scholarship and part of the Berry Scholars Program. Not only do I receive financial assistance; I also participate in Scholars Program events and take Scholars seminars throughout my undergraduate studies. These seminars range from courses in history to literature to sociology. I enjoyed the week-long service and leadership program the summer before my freshman year and the river stewardship adventure before my sophomore year. However, to whom much is given much is expected. Berry Scholars must maintain a certain grade point average and must complete a meaningful and substantial thesis before graduation.

There are several other programs at UD that offer similar opportunities for high-achieving and involved students. These types of programs are ideal since students and the University collaborate to benefit each other.
