UD Basketball
By far one of my favorite aspects of the University of Dayton is Flyers Basketball. I have gotten season vouchers every year since freshman year. Students get vouchers which they can then redeem every two or three games for tickets. For prior seasons, ticket distribution occured on Saturday mornings and involved waiting in line to get tickets, with each person getting up to four tickets. Basically, it was on a first-come first-serve basis. Last year, the line was much longer during the first half of the season than it was during my freshman year, so it was more difficult to procure good seats. As the Flyers' record declined, the line became shorter, and it was clear who the true Flyer Faithful were. As it turned out, it was mainly a bunch of freshman who clearly didn't have anything better to do than wait in lines out in the cold because it was "the thing to do", not because they were actually fans of the Flyers or of basketball for that matter.
This year, Red Scare, the student-run organization for school spirit and team support, adopted a new system based on so-called spirit points. Students acquire points by attending other UD athletic events throughout the year, and the best tickets go to those with the most spirit points. Although this system is extremely flawed for several reasons, my group has gotten pretty good seats so far without waiting for hours in the cold.
Enough about how to get into the games, how about the games themselves? Well, the Flyers look outstanding this year compared to last year, having picked up a point guard transfer, Andres Sandoval, and three talented freshmen, Marcus Johnson, Kurt Huelsman, and London Warren. Returning starters include Brian Roberts, Monty Scott, Charles Little, and Norman Plummer. With added experience from the veterans and speed and talent from the freshman, the Flyers are very exciting to watch. I'm looking forward to attending every game this season and, as always, GO FLYERS!
