UD ASCE Golf Tournament
On September 15th, the UD Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held its annual UD ASCE Golf Tournament. As vice president of the chapter, I was in charge of putting on this event, and I had a lot of help from the great group of officers I work with. This is our only fundraiser of the year and our biggest and most popular event. This year, we had more participants, more hole sponsors, and more prizes than ever before. We had a total of 92 golfers, over 70 of whom were professional civil engineers from around the Dayton area. We also had civil engineering students and faculty from UD compete in the outing, which was held this year for the first time at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro. Heatherwoode is a beautiful and challenging course, and they did a great job of hosting the event. We had donuts donated from UD Dining Services that were enjoyed by golfers before the start of play, and the officers arrived at the course at 6:30am to set up for the big event. After months of preparation and organizing, it was surreal to know that the tournament had finally arrived. It was one thing to see a list of 92 players on paper; it was something else to see 46 golf carts all lined up and ready to go for your event.
The tournament kicked off at 8am, and everyone enjoyed the cool September morning on the links. Beverages were provided during play, and a buffet lunch and awards ceremony took place in the clubhouse following the tournament. Many donated prizes from engineering and construction companies as well as stores and restaurants were raffled off during lunch, and most people left with something. Conveniently, the Messer Construction team I played with took first place. Prizes were also given for closest to the pin and longest drive. Above all, I think everyone had a good time and was happy to support ASCE in a fun-filled environment. Students also had the opportunity to network with professionals and potential employers. The outing is a great way for the UD ASCE Student Chapter to show our appreciation for the support and generosity of local companies that we have such a strong relationship with.
