Newspapers at UD
Living on a college campus, one tends to isolate oneself from the rest of the world. In other words, the college student is so busy with the academic, extracurricular, and social areas of university life that the student becomes disconnected with the happenings of the surrounding world. Sure there is TV with all your typical news networks. But I feel like you don't truly get a grasp on the news unless you read a newspaper. At UD, there are several options for getting this much-needed exposure. Some students take advantage of these options more than others. Probably the most widely read news source is the Flyer News, UD's student newspaper. This paper gives very informative and interesting information specific to UD and its members. It also gives a brief summary of national and international news from the AP, so that is a start. The Dayton Daily News is readily available in various locations around campus. Obviously, this paper provides mainly local news and highlights national and international topics. Business students on campus receive the Wall Street Journal, which is a very valuable news source. Most of the time, however, these papers sit unread and unnoticed for several days on porches. Recently, I've been quite pleased with the appearance of the New York Times in the student union and the library. I find this paper to be very well-balanced between national, international, and business news. The articles are well-written and in-depth, and I applaud UD for making this type of material freely available to its students.
