Lent at UD
One of the main reasons I came to UD was because it's Catholic affiliation fits well with my religious beliefs. I attended a public elementary school and a Catholic high school, one of a handful of Catholic schools in the large, predominantly Protestant, city of Atlanta. I enjoyed being at a Catholic institution during my teens, because it provided an environment conducive to me practicing my faith. I could easily go to Mass on Holy Days, and I could take classes on Catholic doctrine. UD gave me the opportunity to continue my religious practices, something that seems to be continuously more difficult to do among young Americans.
Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, and there were several Masses held throughout the day. I went to 6pm Mass, and the Chapel was as full as I've seen it since I came to UD. Going to Mass helped me to take a break from my homework, step back, and put everything in perspective. For many students, including myself, it is inevitable to get so caught up in school work and activities on campus. Having a good spiritual base helps to re-prioritize these engagements, realizing what is really important and beneficial in the end. My goal during Lent this year is to regularly "step back" and look at what I'm doing in a broader context. Hopefully then I can make it to the end of the semester without too much self-inflicted pressure.
