Independence Day

My dad, Liz, and I with Uncle Sam

I returned to my roots this year for the 4th of July. I went with my parents and my girlfriend, Liz, to the annual parade in my hometown, Dunwoody, Georgia. Liz visited for the long weekend, so it was good to take her to an event I attended so often as a child. I had not been to the parade for many years, either because I was away from home or because I was running the Peachtree Road Race, another July 4th tradition in Atlanta. The "Peachtree" is the world's largest 10k race, with over 55,000 runners participating each year. The Dunwoody parade is much more relaxing, however. It has grown in size since I saw it last, but about half the parade participants were local politicians and their supporters. They were soliciting votes for the upcoming primaries and elections. I suppose it is appropriate to have democracy represented on Independence Day. Friday was a beautiful, relaxing day and a welcome break from the daily grind of work this summer.
