Coneys!

Typical 'coney' from Cincinnati.

During my co-op this year in Cincinnati, I have become accustomed to much of the famous local cuisine. Some of the favorites that just about anyone would like include Graeter's ice cream, Busken baked goods, Montgomery Inn barbeque, and LaRosa's pizza. Other traditional Cincinnati food items are only enjoyed after a taste is acquired for them. These include White Castle and Cincinnati chili, either from Skyline or Gold Star. White Castle sliders, as the small square burgers are called, are an occasional treat for me only on very special occasions, such as my birthday when I brought in 60 sliders for my office (instead of the usual donuts). The chili is probably the most famous and unique type of food in the area. It is particularly "runny" and sweet, and is served on top of spaghetti or hot dogs or included with cream cheese in dip. When placed on hot dogs along with a mountain of shredded cheddar cheese and onion and mustard, the result is known as a coney. These are probably my favorite way to enjoy Cincinnati chili. Although incredibly unhealthy, they are a tasty treat every now and then. Skyline is the most famous chain, although Gold Star is very popular as well. The two are very similar, but Gold Star's chili is a bit more meaty. Regardless of which kind you have, it is definitely worth a try when visiting the southwest Ohio region.
