Break Recap and 1st Day of Spring
I had a great spring break down in Argentina with my sister. It was a little tough being there and not knowing how to speak Spanish, but I was able to get by. The people were generally very friendly, but the weather wasn't too good to me. For a city that doesn't get much rain, it was just my luck that four out of my six days in Buenos Aires were rainy and overcast. However, I was still able to explore much of the city, and the weather was perfect for visiting a few museums.
Probably my favorite aspect of the trip was the food. Argentinians cook and eat a ton of beef. I had some fantastic steaks at nice restaurants at a very low price thanks to the low value of the peso. With the strong Italian influence in the country, the ice cream was also excellent. One of the favorite sweets in Argentina is dulce de leche, and the dulce de leche ice cream was simply phenomenal.
The taxis were plentiful and cheap, but always made me a little nervous with the, let's say, very fast and aggressive driving. Despite the pollution from the buses and cars, Buenos Aires had some beautiful parks where one could see professional dog-walkers walking up to ten or fifteen dogs. Of course, you are bound to see a couple dancing a tango in the street during the Sunday afternoon street markets which is quite entertaining.
The European architecture in Buenos Aires is beautiful, often making you forget that you are in South America. The inhabitants of the city also seem to be concerned with their image, and always look and dress their best in public. Before I left, we were lucky enough to go to a St. Patrick's party at the Irish embassy and meet the Irish ambassador.
In contrast to the warmth I experienced during break, it is cold and windy here in Dayton, Ohio, with several inches of snow on the ground. Ironically, it's also the first day of spring.
