Heating Issues
Like our plumbing problems last semester, I was reminded last week of the excitement that comes in living in old UD houses. On Friday morning, my room mates and I woke up to a chilly, 50 degree environment in our house. Our house has radiators, which were warm on Friday morning, but not as hot as they should have been. Conveniently, this malfunction occured during the coldest temperatures I've experienced since I came to Dayton. (Being from Georgia, these were the coldest temperatures I had ever experienced!). The temperature was 10 below (Fahrenheit!) with wind chills around 30 below.
My room mates and I could not figure out if the radiators were actually broken, or if they just couldn't keep up with the extreme temperatures. Like most UD houses, ours is quite drafty, allowing a steady stream of frigid air inside. We decided it would be best to submit a maintenance request, which UD responded to Friday afternoon. After a quick inquiry, UD maintenance called in a heating and air contractor. Much to our surprise and relief, the repair man came Friday evening and was able to replace the broken controller on the boiler in the basement. This was thankfully an easy fix for a very old heating system that is still going strong.
