Door-To-Door for Obama
One day I overheard my mom talking about volunteering on the phone. When she hung up, she realized she had made a mistake. The Obama campaign in Lucas County called asking if I'd like to volunteer, but my mom had thought they said her name...and she said yes she would. So that's how I ended up volunteering in the first place.
On one of my days off my mom and I went to the Democratic headquarters in downtown Toledo, and found people of all ages and colors racing around the place. We met up with our assigned person, and were briefed on voter registration. From there we were handed a map of a neighborhood in Toledo and sent on our way.
We simply asked if people were registered to vote and if they would like to be. My mom must have been better at it than I was because she registered three people compared to my measly one.
It was also nice to get out and do something back home. I didn't really become involved in any civic stuff until I was at school in Dayton, and although I "knew" Toledo and Dayton had many similarities, I hadn't yet experienced any of those similarities in Toledo yet.
